Understanding the Language of CEA

Glossary for CEA Terms

Explore Greenhub’s cross-disciplinary glossary of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) — a growing knowledge base for greenhouse growers, indoor farm managers, researchers, breeders, and agtech innovators. Here you’ll find concise definitions of key vertical farming and plant science terms that help create a shared language across the CEA industry.

T

Technical Replicate

Multiple measurements of the same sample or plant to account for measurement or instrumentvariability.

Temperature Differential

ΔT (Temperature Differential) — Difference between inside and outside air temperature.

Thermal Screens

Screens/apertures designed to reduce night heatloss and save energy.

In vitro plant propagation under sterile conditions.

Top Lighting

Overhead fixtures (HPS or LEDs) illuminating plants from above. The traditionalgreenhouse and indoor farming setup.

Top Lighting (Digital Control)

Actuator setpoints in % dimming, intensity steps, or µmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹ targets. Logged as “lightingon-time” and “lighting...
